All is lost...or is it?

Anyone have experience with data recovery companies?

Our desktop died about a month ago. I found a place certified to do Apple repair (thanks for the info, Chick!) and took it in last week. Hard drive is dead, kaput, totally gone. And they were unable to recover any data. All 4,500+ pictures in iPhoto. All my kids' iTune downloads, all the Photoshop actions I have purchased, all the fonts I have either purchased or downloaded....all gone.

Had a good cry over it, especially my photos. Most had been printed out. But the last 3-4 months had not. Dad's wedding. Mason's 3rd birthday. Stuff that is irreplaceable!

The computer shop gave me a brochure about a data recovery company that has great success with dead hard drives. Their services START at $500. Holy cow! I'm sure I'll eventually decide it is worth it.

Get a back-up system in place. NOW. Get two back-up systems in place. I was working on it with a new external hard drive, but had only just started. Hard lesson to learn...

I'm crying a great big puddle for your right now. If that company can guarantee your photos and recovery it's definitely worth the $500. So did your Dad really get married again? That's awesome...email or call me and share the details! I'm sad you aren't coming to visit this summer...any hope for the fall?

About five years ago my hard drive crashed in my PC. I lost EVERYTHING - including pictures - hundreds, including when the kids were still in Korea. I contacted a data recovery company in Southfield. They were able to recover all of my data, including pictures, for $700. So yes, I know it is a lot of money, but well worth it. Also....go out and buy an external hard drive. They are not expensive. With the external hard drives now, they come with backup software. Make sure you do full backups weekly. For someone that works in the computer field for the last 16 years, and preached to my clients about backing up their data, I should have known better - but life got in the way. Backup, backup and backup!! :)

I had a hard drive die about 5 yrs ago. I didn't have anything backed up. Thankfully it was before I had a digital camera so I didn't lose a ton of pics. But I did lose all of my info on my kids. I usually type an idea for a LO in Word, or things about my kids at certain stages in life so I can have that info to go back and scrap. I frantically was trying to remember everything, and I couldn't. Computers are a great thing...and sometimes very frustrating!!
